Art of the Menu: La Condesa and Mr. Zub's Deli

Art of the Menu is a great site by UnderConsideration that showcases good menu design. The menu is a highly practical and functional item, so its design is often overlooked simply because people are trying to decide what to eat and see how much things cost. However, its necessity in a restaurant is also an excellent reason to make sure it’s well designed. The two menus I selected from the site that I particularly like are from La Condesa, designed by Mucca, and Mr. Zub’s Deli, designed by Ohio Boy.
I like the La Condesa menu for its mixture of hand-drawn and digital typography. It also captures the mood of the restaurant and would add to the experience of dining there. The colors and texture are playful, but still very well designed.
Mr. Zub’s Deli menu is also great for the atmosphere it creates. It captures the idea of delis and sandwiches surprisingly well and experiments with type all set on a very nice grid.—Charis Poon
