Juxtapoz is a magazine made in 1994 that features contemporary underground art that reflect the nature of Southern California pop culture. The main categories of art that Juxtapoz features are illustration, erotica, street art, tattoo and graffiti. The cover of each issue portrays a work by a feature artist, usually an illustration. In the October 2011 issue, the cover features a work by Jeremy Fish. This cover is particular interesting to me because the artist not only created the artwork for the cover but also tweaked the design of the masthead to fit in with the design his piece.
The inside of Juxtapoz typically consists of very large images of artwork as the primary focus with small boxes of simply designed body text as a secondary focus. This structure of more image with less body copy works well with this particular magazine because its main focus is the artwork. If i opened the very vibrant, graphic and intriguing cover and in the inside found myself reading a publication with small insignificant images and large areas of over-designed text, i would be disappointed because I am expecting to see a lot of art. Fortunately, Juxtapoz's design is a tasteful and appropriate balance of image and text and for that I appreciate it.— Donna Zitelli
