Mahala magazine is a South African publication, founded by Andy Davis. There has only been 2 issues since August 2010, but I thought it was a really different magazine in terms of aesthetic and design. The pages are matte, unlike the popular American magazines we see today. The visual design of the magazine is very raw and simple, yet it is sophisticated. The goal of this magazine is to uncover things in South African culture that have been swept under the rug, as Davis says in an interview. In terms of the design of the magazine, nothing is embellished or over-designed, but rather the design is very raw and straightforward. Which goes well with the goal of its content – there is nothing hidden and what you see is what you get. —Donna Zitelli
