The Exquisite Book: 100 Artists Play a Collaborate Game

100 contemporary fine artists, illustrators, designers and comic artists contributed to The Exquisite Book. The idea is taken from the Surrealist exquisite corpse game where a paper is folded into thirds and a different person takes turns drawing on each segment only having seen the edges of the other third. The book successfully pushes this idea by giving 100 talented artists a few rules and a deadline for completion. Each artist was responsible for finishing a page in two weeks. They were organized into ten groups of ten to create ten different visual narratives. The first artist had a few words given to them for inspiration and each consecutive artist could only view the page preceding theirs when drawing their own page. The book was designed by ALSO (Jenny Volvovski, Matt Lamothe and Julia Rothman). I find this book incredibly compelling in the innovative idea behind it and the wonderful illustrations. It’s playful in format since it consists of fold outs and is also a great way to collage the work of a large number of talented creatives within a framework.—Charis Poon
