What I appreciate about Corduroy is that the editors give image and text the same amount of weight in importance. Each photograph is treated like a work of art—it is never cropped, or ‘fitted’ into a layout design. The articles are given space to breathe on the page, and each actor, musician, designer and fine artist are given an equal amount of opportunity to express their work inside of the magazine. The layout itself expresses these ideals in the sense that it is very simple, but still stylish. The layout is built around the photographs and articles instead of the other way around. Each issue adheres to a very strict style guide—with features articles consisting of full page photographs or half page photographs with the article on the bottom of the page, and the image on the top. The magazine contributers claim to stay away from mainstream topics, and focus on who they deem ‘timeless’ artists bycreating something classic... based on the idea that a corduroy jacket never goes out of style.—Belinda Hale
