étapes

étapes international is a quarterly magazine focused on contemporary graphic design and visual culture. It is originally derived from étapes: the monthly French graphic design magazine. The magazines layout has a strong visual presentation that relies on a panorama of big beautiful images showing recent projects in design. étapes does not have one consistent grid structure through the magazine, it changes according to the article, for example for the interview they use a 4 column grid; they occasionally switch to 3, 2 or 1 column grid structures. The use of type is consistent and its what ties the spread together. They use a thick black line with each department head, headline and section head. There is also a digital étapes for iPads. —Melisa Ozkan
