Wilmott Magazine

Wilmott Magazine is an English magazine founded in 1999 by Paul Wilmott and published by Wiley Publishing. It is an 11 inch square magazine that is issued six times a year. Its content is focused on quantitative finance, thus the demographic it targets are people working in the field of investment banking, finance, risk management, etc.

What strikes me about the magazine is the contrast between the content and the design of the magazine. For a magazine that houses mathematical formulas, numbers and financial analyses, it is unusual and also intriguing that the look of the magazine is so colorful, charming and, in some sections, humorous.

In my opinion, this makes the magazine very well-balanced - the content is heavy, but the design is light and inviting. For example, if the magazine was a standard rectangle, all black and white, no humor, with just text, graphs and numbers, along with all the dense information, nobody would enjoy reading it, or even read it at all for that matter. The colorful, pop-art inspired covers draw the reader in and the financial comic strips and several lighter articles that are included inside help to balance out the heavy content. Here are examples of several of their covers:

Also, an interesting fact about Wilmott Magazine is that it is one of the most expensive magazines in the world – subscribers pay $325 - $650 annually for 6 issues! But for $50 - $100 an issue, subscribers are getting an intelligent, thought-provoking, creative and well-designed publication – totally worth the money! –Donna Zitelli
